![]() Any Blu-ray disc that has been imported onto the server has to subsequently be loaded into this vault, which is connected to one of the players via a USB. This 100-disc Blu-ray carousel, referred to by Kaleidescape as a Modular Disc Vault, is the key to how the company has managed to placate the studios. For Blu-ray playback, a third component becomes necessary. If even greater capacity is required, multiple servers can be used. The 3U model’s fourteenth cartridge is a ‘hot spare’, provided for extra protection. The higher-spec model is 3U high and its 14 cartridges basically quadruple the storage capacity of the 1U server. One, which is 1 rack-mount unit (‘1U’) high, contains four cartridge-loaded 2TB drives and can accommodate up to 900 DVDs, 150 Blu-rays, approximately 10,000 CDs or a mix of the three. so that you can easily import new discs into your system as and when they are acquired.Īnd servers? All existing and current models will work, but the newer ones boast the capacities needed to accommodate a decent collection of Blu-ray content. ![]() Although the importation service offered by Kaleidescape dealers now caters for Blu-rays as well as CDs and DVDs, it is advised to have at least one M500. The latter includes an in-built Blu-ray/CD/DVD drive for direct playback and importation. Kaleidescape has two new players that offer Blu-ray compatibility, the compact M300 and the M500 tested here. Everything is built from high-end hardware, and has the same levels of performance that can be expected from top-flight AV gear. One or more players are connected via the network, located in the rooms where playback is required. Your movies and music are copied bit-by-bit and stored on these during the importation process, and RAID-K technology minimises the chance of losing anything in the event of a drive fault. The first is a powerful media server, located in an equipment room or basement, that contains a number of high-capacity hard drives. With the exception of the Mini/Cinema One, a Kaleidescape system consists of two types of component. And now Kaleidescape has added Blu-ray to the mix. ![]() Although highly expensive and intended for professional installation (bar the one-box Mini, since renamed the Cinema One), there’s nothing to beat its smoothly presented and intuitive method of selecting DVDs and CDs for playback. Yet, there are some less technical solutions that can be as important when “developing a game with localization in mind”. All of this is VERY important, but you already know this. ![]() Even I, as a translator and localizer, am bored with all the “do not use texts in images”, “translations to other languages tend to be shorter or longer”, “pay attention to placeholders” etc. Indie game developers are constantly reminded of “develop your game with localization in mind”. And from my perspective it is one of the most informative and easy to create tools, that has amazing, positive impact on game localization quality. I reposted it at Reddit’s /r/gamedev and in the discussion that followed it occurred that a localization style guide is rather an unknown tool for indie game developers. The point of having such a system in place is to ensure all clients’ products and documentation have the same level of linguistic quality, regardless of the target language or complexity of the translation process.Recently I wrote a blog post where I describe how to check localization of a game for free, with almost no effort. This framework will offer businesses the chance to assess the quality of the translation against previously defined metrics. There will be a number of error categories in a QA report, covering areas such as accuracy, terminology, country standards and language quality. This is why providing clear instructions is important at this stage – for example, you might only want a couple of pages looked at, rather than the whole document. Massive changes should not be expected at this stage of the process, and if they are suggested it’s worthwhile looking at the source content to make sure it was authored with translation in mind. A few minimum standards include being a native speaker of the target language, having all round exceptional language skills, having a complete understanding of the language translation process and being a subject matter specialist for the content being translated.įirms may be tempted to use someone in-house who has a good level of knowledge with the target language, but this will not match up to a trained expert who has working experience of in-country dialect or culture. An in-country reviewer will not be needed for every project, but if you are using one, make sure the person has the right skills, industry knowledge and a good understanding of your brand. For example, just one incidence of inconsistent terminology in medical literature can have serious regulatory implications and slow down time to market.Īlthough it is the final quality step, the same diligence is required – this is your final safety net. It can be the major differentiator between a minimally localized product and a truly professional finished product. Tests should be carried out on all localized deliverables, which include software, websites and multimedia, as well as checking document layout and formatting. QA tools of choice include QA distiller and XBench. ![]() When developing a comprehensive and customizable solution, the focus should always be on analyzing the root cause of any quality issues identified. Project requirements can vary significantly, as the actual language pair being used, subject matter expertise required and any existing deadlines can all have an effect on the approach taken. Whether it is conducted in-country by subject matter experts or by in-house linguistic staff from your localization agency, testing on the actual product should be conducted by native target-language testers. This means the final validation of the product’s interface is essential and so clients should look to make sure their localized materials undergo full testing in their final output. While there are compelling reasons for doing so – such as cost, efficiency and protecting the source code – it means translations are often performed with limited context other than reference materials provided by clients. In the majority of cases, the final output format of a localization project will be re-engineered by non-native technical specialists. Even the likes of Pepsi, Coca-Cola and HSBC Bank have all found out the hard way!Īs time and cost pressures intensify, the likelihood of error increases as companies turn more and more to high-tech solutions to get the projects rolled-out on time and within budget – language quality review has therefore never been so important. ![]() ![]() It may be obvious, but all reputable companies strive to produce localized products that appear indigenous to their target markets, and marketing materials that ensure a seamless launch, yet why is the importance of language quality assurance (LQA) overlooked by so many companies? After all, just one significant translation blunder can set a company back months or even years. When it comes to localization, the importance of a high-quality final product cannot be overstated. ![]() Now, we need to configure IDEs like NetBeans or Eclipse in order to execute JavaFX applications.
